Elementary School Program Options
Intervention with elementary age students is provided by the ALC in partnership with traditional buildings. These extended day and summer programs provide a window of opportunity for at-risk learners.
These opportunities are an important key to helping at-risk students progress in traditional school settings. Students may become disengaged from the school experience and/or burdened with personal-social-family concerns by their middle years. Offering intervention in the elementary years is, therefore, paramount.
EXCEL: Targeted Services
EXCEL: Targeted Services are a resource offered by the Red River ALC for families to identify children who are at social or academic risk or not meeting grade level benchmarks. EXCEL: Targeted Services help to get these students back on track by offering classes after school and in the summer.
Students in the elementary grades can access Red River ALC services through EXCEL: Targeted Services After School and EXCEL: Targeted Services Summer Academy. These programs are based in each of Moorhead's elementary schools, Robert Asp, Ellen Hopkins and S.G. Reinertsen. Barnesville and DGF may also work with the ALC to provide extended day and summer programs for elementary age students.
Middle School Program Options
For middle school students the range of program options and locations available include:
- EXCEL Middle at Horizon
- Red River Middle at Bella
- Traditional School Setting at Horizon
- EXCEL: Targeted Services Extended Day
- EXCEL: Targeted Services Summer Academy
Middle school level options can be combined to create the best fit for each student.
EXCEL Middle at Horizon – Middle level students needing nontraditional options during the regular school day may be eligible for the “school within a school” option, referred to as EXCEL Middle. Excel Middle provides a smaller setting within the traditional building.
Red River Middle at Bella Center – Students who need an option outside of the traditional school building may choose the Red River Middle program located at Bella Center in Moorhead.
Extended Day – Middle level students enrolled in traditional or alternative programs during the day can also access EXCEL: Targeted Services Extended Day. After-school programs may be offered at Horizon Middle School and at the Bella Center in Moorhead. Barnesville and DGF also may work with the ALC to provide extended-day programs.
Extended Year – Middle level students enrolled in full- or part-time programs during the school year can also access EXCEL: Targeted Services Summer Academy. This program is an option for students who are in traditional or alternative settings. Summer Academy programs may be offered at Horizon Middle School and at the Bella Center in Moorhead. Barnesville and DGF also may work with the ALC to provide summer programs.
Flexible Options – Middle level students can be enrolled in any combination of traditional and alternative programming.

High School Program Options
A comprehensive range of options for high school students is available through the Red River ALC.
For high school students, program options and locations available include:

- EXCEL: Targeted Services Extended Day

High school level options can be combined flexibly to create the best fit for each student.
EXCEL 9 at Moorhead High School – Ninth-grade students, making the transition from middle school to high school, may benefit from the “school within a school” option, referred to as EXCEL 9. This program provides core instruction to ninth-grade students in a smaller setting and allows them to take electives in the traditional school.
EXCEL at Moorhead High School – High school level students needing nontraditional options during the regular school day may be eligible for the “school within a school” option, referred to as EXCEL High School. EXCEL High School provides school day independent study options to complete graduation requirements.
Red River ALC at Bella Center – Students who need an option outside of the traditional school building may choose the Red River ALC program located at Bella Center in Moorhead. This alternative setting provides a caring and demanding environment to promote success.
Independent Study – Independent Study options are available to accommodate a variety of student and family schedules. This option may be right for a student who has fallen behind grade level or wishes to graduate on a “fast track.” Independent study options are available at both Moorhead High School and the Bella Center during traditional and nontraditional hours.

Extended-day programs may be offered at Moorhead High School and at the Bella Center in Moorhead. Barnesville and DGF may also work with the ALC to provide extended-day programs.
