Do you wonder about your child's development? If you do, you can find answers to your questions. Professionals at Early Intervention Services do testing and can give suggestions to help you help your child. There is no cost for these services. If your child has not met the skills identified below, review the Referral to EIS section and contact EIS at 218-284-3800.

By 3 Months

  • responds to loud noises
  • watches mom or dad's face

By 6 Months

  • babbles
  • follows moving objects with eyes
  • transfers objects from one hand to another
  • rolls from stomach to back
  • holds head steadily
  • responds to familiar voices

By 12 Months

  • sits without support
  • pulls to stand
  • walks with one hand held
  • crawls well for long distances
  • places objects into containers

By 18 Months

  • follows simple direction
  • feeds self
  • walks without help
  • uses 8-10 understandable words
  • can scribble

By 24 Months

  • listens to short stories
  • uses 2-3 word sentences
  • jumps and runs
  • names familiar toys, parts of the body and people
  • can play independently
  • maintains eye contact during social interactions

By 36 Months

  • walks upstairs alternating feet
  • plays with other children for a short time
  • uses the toilet
  • can identify at least one color
  • uses 3-5 word sentences
  • pedals tricycle
  • plays with toys as they are intended

By 4 Years

  • asks “wh” questions
  • takes turns
  • dresses/undresses without help
  • plays simple group games
  • gives first and last name
  • shows many emotions

By 5 Years

  • speaks so others understand
  • cuts with scissors
  • counts up to 10 objects
  • draws

  • When you look at and point to a toy across the room, does your child look at it?
  • When you are not paying attention to your child, does he or she try to get your attention?
  • Does your child point to objects?
  • Does your child use sounds or words to get attention or help?
  • When you call your child's name, does he or she respond by looking or turning toward you?
  • Does your child pretend to play with toys?
  • Can your child play properly with small toys (e.g., cars or bricks) without just mouthing, fiddling or dropping them?
  • Does your child look you in the eye for more than a second or two?
  • Does your child imitate you?
  • Have you ever wondered if your child is deaf?
