Dean Hornbacher

Inducted Saturday, September 26, 2009


Dean Hornbacher graduated from Moorhead High School in 1963. While at Moorhead High he was involved in the concert choir and Wig and Sig Drama Club. Hornbacher graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Dakota in 1967.

While attending high school and college, Hornbacher worked as a part-time clerk after school and during the summers at Ted’s Supervalu and Northport Clothiers. He began his career at Hornbacher’s Foods in 1967 after graduating from college. Hornbacher has been president and chief operating officer of Hornbacher’s Foods since 1980.

Hornbacher has been active in the Fargo-Moorhead community. He was a director and officer of the Moorhead Chamber of Commerce from 1972-74. He served on the North High Spartan Booster Club Board from 1986-89 and was president during the 1988-89 school year. Hornbacher served on the Village Family Service Center’s board of directors from 1991-98 and was chairman in 1997. From 1999-2009, Hornbacher served on the board of directors for Children’s Village Foundation, and he was chairman from 2001-03.

In 1989 Hornbacher received the Partner in Education Award from the Fargo Public Schools. In 1999 he received the Governor’s Award for the Arts from North Dakota Governor Ed Schafer. Hornbacher was selected to the Fargo North High School Hall of Fame in 2003. He received the Grocer of the Year award from the North Dakota Grocer’s Association in 2004, the Lions Club International Foundation’s Melvin Jones Fellow award for humanitarian services in 2006, and the Vocational Training Center’s
Directors Award for support of workers with disabilities in 2007.

Dean and his wife, JoAnn, have been married for 42 years. They live in Horace, North Dakota, and are the parents of two children, Steven and Katherine, and have three grandchildren.
