Brad Atchison

Inducted Saturday, October 6, 2018


Brad Atchison graduated from Moorhead High School in 1973. During his years as a Spud, he participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was a member of the 1971 state championship football team, the 1972 state runner-up football team, the 1973 state track and field champions, and the 1972 state runner-up for Legion baseball. Atchison was an all-state quarterback in football and an all-state basketball player. During his four years at Concordia College, Moorhead, he participated in football, basketball and track. Atchison graduated from Concordia College in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health.

Atchison began his teaching career in Clara City, Minn., where he taught physical education and health and served as football head coach and girls basketball head coach for 18 years. In 1994 he became a teacher and coach in Willmar, Minn., where he worked for 22 years. During his years in Willmar he taught physical education and served as varsity football assistant coach and girls basketball head coach. He retired in 2017 after 40 years in education, teaching students life lessons in the classroom, in the gymnasium, and on the field.

During his 35 years as a girls basketball head coach, Atchison’s career record was 589-249. His 589 victories currently rank sixth in all-time wins for girls basketball coaches in Minnesota. Atchison’s teams won 18 conference titles and six section titles. His 1986 Midwest Minnesota (Clara City/Maynard) team won the state championship, and in 2004 his Willmar girls basketball team finished second in the state tournament. Atchison took six teams to state tournaments.

In 2002 Atchison was inducted into the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 2004 he was named Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. Atchison served as president of the Girls Basketball Coaches Association and on the advisory committee for girls sports for the Minnesota State High School League for numerous years.

Since his retirement from coaching in 2012, Atchison has worked as a radio commentator for KWLM in Willmar covering Willmar sports.

Brad and his wife, LeAnn, live in Willmar. They have two children, Ben and Linsey.
