Steve Wonderlich graduated from Moorhead High School in 1974. In high school, he was involved in Key Club, football, and track and field, where he set the school record in shot put. He also coordinated the recreational swimming program for people with disabilities held at the Moorhead High pool.
Wonderlich graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Concordia College in 1978. He completed his doctorate in clinical psychology in 1985 at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He did his internship and a
fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Department of Psychiatry.
Wonderlich has been associate chairman for the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences, Grand Forks, N.D., since 1996 and a professor in the department since 1999. Wonderlich was named a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor in 2007. Wonderlich has been director of clinical research at the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute since 1999 and chair of the Department of Eating Disorders at Sanford Health, Fargo, N.D., since 2010.
Additionally, Wonderlich has been director of the Treatment Collaborative for Traumatized Youth for the state of North Dakota since 2006 and co-director of the Eating and Weight Disorder Institute, Sanford Health, Fargo, since 2011.
Besides being principal investigator on numerous federally funded research projects, Wonderlich has written, edited or reviewed numerous journal articles, books and book chapters, and he presents on topics of eating disorders nationally and internationally. In 2009, he received the Price Family Foundation Award for Research Excellence from the National Eating Disorder Association and the Academy for Eating Disorder Award for Leadership in Research. He currently sits on the board of directors for the Eating Disorder Research Society and the Salvation Army, Fargo, and is a member several organizations, including American Psychological Association, North Dakota Psychological Association, Academy for Eating Disorders, North Dakota
Alliance for Children’s Justice, National Eating Disorder Association, and
St. Joseph’s Parish.
Steve and his wife, Karen, have three children, Sara, Anna and Joe, and one grandchild, Emma. Wonderlich lives in Fargo, N.D.
Update: On Oct. 26, 2017, Steve Wonderlich received a lifetime achievement award from the North Dakota Psychological Association.
