Larry Knutson

Inducted Saturday, September 21, 2013


Larry Knutson graduated from Ashby (Minn.) High School in 1966. In high school he participated in football, basketball, track, baseball, band, choir and FFA. Knutson attended Fergus Falls Junior College, now M State Fergus Falls, for two years, and he completed a course in baseball umpire school in Florida. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1973. Knutson studied radio broadcasting at Thief River Falls (Minn.) Technical College.

Knutson has spent 38 years in radio, working as a self-employed radio announcer and house painter. For the past 34 years, Knutson has covered Spud athletics on the radio. Not only has he covered the games, but Knutson also has sought funding and contracted with the radio stations to keep the Spuds on the airwaves. He also does the public address for Moorhead High School track meets and volleyball games.

In 2005, Knutson received the School Bell Award from Education Moorhead in recognition of his 25 years of broadcasting for the Spuds. The School Bell Award recognizes people in the media whose outstanding coverage of Moorhead Area Public Schools keeps the public informed about education.

Since 1983, Knutson has been the radio voice of Cobber athletics for Concordia College, Moorhead. He is the longest running play-by-play announcer in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In 2008, MIAC sports information directors honored him with the Mike Augustin Award for his outstanding contributions to MIAC athletics. He was inducted into the Concordia College Hall of Fame in 2011 for his contributions to the college’s athletic program.

Additionally Knutson does the public address for the Special Olympics in Moorhead, assists with Moorhead High athletic banquets and programs, and serves as master of ceremonies for civic and school organizations, including serving as master of ceremonies for the Moorhead High School Hall of Honor induction ceremonies. Knutson was active at Grace United Methodist Church, Moorhead, as a church council member, Sunday school teacher and part of the mentoring program.

Larry and his wife, JoAnn, have two adult daughters, Tami and Janet, and five grandchildren. Knutson lives in Moorhead, Minn.
