James A. Garrity graduated from Moorhead High School in 1972. During high school he was involved in cross country, wrestling and track. Garrity earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota. He earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1980 and then completed an internship at Hennepin County Medical Center before completing his residency in ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine in 1984. In 1985, he did his fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology and orbital surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and Allegheny General Hospital prior to returning to Mayo Clinic in 1986.For the last 28 years, Garrity has been on the staff at the Mayo Clinic where he is currently the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Professor of Ophthalmology. He specializes in neuro-ophthalmology, orbital diseases and surgery especially orbital inflammations, orbital tumors and thyroid eye disease. Garrity has written numerous journal articles, books and book chapters, and has lectured on topics of orbital diseases nationally and internationally. At the state level, he is a member and former president of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology. Nationally, he has been active in the American Academy of Ophthalmology where he was recognized with an Honor Award and a Senior Honor Award. Garrity has consistently been listed in Best Doctors in America. At the Mayo Clinic he was teacher of the year on two separate occasions and honored with the Distinguished Mayo Clinic Clinician award. He is the former medical director of the Mayo Clinic International practice. Garrity’s community involvement includes helping to establish and run the Salvation Army Eye Clinic.James and his wife, Karen, have two adult children, Megan and Barbara, and one grandchild. Garrity lives in Rochester, Minn.
