Darvin Miller graduated from Binford (N.D.) High School in 1963. He earned his diploma in auto mechanics from North Dakota State School of Science in 1965 and a bachelor’s of science in education degree with a major in industrial arts and minor in mathematics from University of North Dakota Ellendale in 1969.Miller began his 37-year teaching career by teaching industrial arts for one year in Sisseton, S.D. In 1970 Miller began the automotive program at Moorhead High School, and he taught there until retiring in 2006. Under Miller, the Moorhead High School automotive program earned National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certification in 2002. In 2003 the Moorhead High automotive program became Minnesota’s third secondary school to offer an Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) certified program.While working at Moorhead High, Miller served as department chair of the industrial technology department for 14 years. Each year Miller attended automotive training, and he was Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified in four areas. In 1980 Miller developed auto mechanics performance tests and organized test questions for the Minnesota Curriculum Services Center. Miller also was instrumental in the design and development of regional automotive competitive events. He trained and coached Moorhead High School students for state and national automotive trouble-shooting contests for 22 years.Miller was named Moorhead Teacher of the Year in 1981. Miller also received the Minnesota Industrial Arts Association Distinguished Service Certificate in 1979 and recognition as Minnesota Teacher of Excellence in 1981 and 1989 Minnesota IBM Computer Teacher of the Year. Miller was named the 2005 Moorhead High School Teacher of the Year.After retiring Miller worked as Minnesota assistant state manager for AYES for two years. He served as president of Minnesota Teachers of Transportation & Industrial Areas (MTTIA) in 2007, served on the Technical College Automotive Advisory Committee, and is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.Darvin and his wife, Karen, have three adult children, Lisa Schmidt, Sonya Romero and Jason Miller, and five grandchildren. Miller lives in Moorhead, Minn.
