Rod McLarnan

Inducted Saturday, October 8, 2016

Rod McLarnan graduated from Moorhead High School in 1944. During high school, he participated in football, basketball and track. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and served for 22 months. McLarnan earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Minnesota in 1950 and his law degree from William Mitchell in 1954.

He returned to Moorhead in 1958 to practice law first with Gaylord Saetre, later with Vance Thysell, and then at McLarnan, Hannaher and Skatvold. He is a former president of the 7th Judicial District Bar and was active in legal organizations throughout Minnesota. In 2008 the Clay County Bar Association recognized him with a Lifetime Justice Award. McLarnan retired from active practice on Jan. 1, 2013.

McLarnan served on the Moorhead Park Board for 12 years, including 10 years as chairman. During those years the park board purchased Gooseberry Park, developed the first nine holes of Village Green golf course, and led development of the Moorhead Sports Center. McLarnan joined the Salvation Army board of directors in 1985 and later served as chairman for 22 years. He remains active with the Salvation Army serving noon meals and ringing the bell for the Red Kettle Campaign. Former Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker declared Feb. 27, 2014, “Rod McLarnan Day” in honor of McLarnan’s years of service to the Salvation Army.

Additionally, McLarnan served as president of the Moorhead Jaycees in 1962, president of the Moorhead Area Chamber of Commerce in 1968, on the Moorhead Charter Commission twice, and as a founding member for the Minnesota State University Moorhead Alumni Foundation. From 2002-13 he was a volunteer lawyer at the Minnesota Legal Aid office in Moorhead.

McLarnan has traveled to Italy, Crete, Ghana and twice to China to teach English to children with Global Volunteers, an international service group that sends volunteers to underprivileged areas in the world. Five years ago, McLarnan established a volunteer reading program at Moorhead’s S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School. For a few hours each week he reads with identified students as part of a program that now falls under Minnesota Reading Corps.

McLarnan lives in Moorhead. He has five adult children, Timothy, Terrance, Nancy Ammerman, Susan Bergland and Thomas, and 14 grandchildren.
