Welcome to S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School! Reinertsen Elementary has many educational opportunities for students in grades K-4. Our school of 750 students is welcoming to all and is designed with smaller learning areas, or neighborhoods, throughout the building. We work closely with families, and we are proud of our students' achievement.

Our instructional program is designed to meet the needs of all students. Children receive whole class and small group instruction. Our teachers are data savvy, using assessment results to check for students' understanding and growth. We provide music, physical education, art and health instruction and teach a variety of technology skills integrated into all areas of learning.

Creating a safe and respectful school community is one of our priorities. We are a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports school with clear expectations and recognition for positive behavior.

Parents are welcome at Reinertsen. We support parent involvement and communication. Parents are encouraged to contact teachers, the assistant principal or the principal with any questions or concerns. Reinertsen's active parent organization meets monthly and plans many ways for parents to get involved in the school.

Our School History

S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School, which opened in 2004, was named in honor of S.G. "Steve" Reinertsen, who served as superintendent of the Moorhead schools from 1926 to 1955. During his tenure as superintendent, six school facilities were built. A visionary leader, Reinertsen also helped establish the school lunch program.

Reinertsen Elementary was designed to be efficient and economical. We educate more than 700 students daily, with an additional 200 students attending kindergarten at Probstfield Center for Education. To maintain the efficiency of a larger school while creating a community feel, our building was designed around the neighborhood structure. When you visit Reinertsen, you will notice five distinct "neighborhoods" that consist of approximately five grade-level classrooms, several support classrooms and a team area. This design allows students to feel the connection of a smaller community while experiencing the opportunities of a larger campus.

Curriculum and Learning

At S.G. Reinertsen Elementary we are focused, like all Moorhead Area Public Schools, on teaching the common core standards for mathematics and reading. To accomplish this goal, we have adopted Benchmark Literacy as a resource for core reading instruction and Bridges Mathematics as a resource for core math instruction. In both reading and math, our district and school have also identified a variety of other strong resources to supplement the core resources. The Reinertsen staff has adopted professional learning communities, or PLCs, to promote continual professional growth in our educators. Reinertsen teachers also participate in collaborative teams to achieve common goals. SIOP, or Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, is another main focus for S.G. Reinertsen and the district as a whole. SIOP is a focus on solid and proven teaching methods that help all learners, especially those with language needs, process and learn more effectively. Teachers remain focused on three main components:

  • Lesson Planning:
    • Lessons will be focused around a content objective that states what students should learn and a language objective that states how students should demonstrate their learning.
    • These objectives drive instruction and will be shared with students before every lesson.
    • Teachers will use physical materials like pictures, videos, objects and events to connect with students.

  • Building Background Knowledge:
    • This is linking learning to concrete experiences.
    • Teachers will seek out experiences unique to individual students.
    • Teachers will create experiences in which the whole class can share.
    • Students will connect learning to themselves.
    • Vocabulary is taught, reviewed and emphasized.

  • Interaction:
    • Highly engaged students are the key to strong learning.
    • Student speaking is maximized.
    • Student participation with other students is maximized.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. The staff and students at S.G. Reinertsen have implemented PBIS since the 2008-09 school year. The goals of the program are:

  • Focus on acknowledging students for consistent positive behavior.
  • Teach behavior expectations as specific skills with expectations clearly outlined for students. Skills are taught in relation to real-life situations.
  • Recognize students who demonstrate "Bucket-Filler Behavior."
  • Engage students in problem solving when problem behaviors occur.
  • Implement routines and language that are consistent throughout the school.
  • Ultimately, good behavior is the key to academic success.

Health and Safety

The staff and students at S.G. Reinertsen have been active participants in Moorhead Area Public Schools' emphasis on improving student health and safety. By improving the nutrition of what we eat in school and eliminating unnecessary or unhealthy consumption throughout the day, we are working toward a healthier student population. But we haven't stopped there. We have ensured regular fitness and activity by providing physical education and recess. Additionally, we experience strong parent support when we conduct fitness testing. The Walking Wednesday program also has extended physical education and fitness beyond the regular school day.
