Moorhead High wrestling team advances to state for third year in a row

The Moorhead High School wrestling team, coached by Skip Toops, has advanced to the state tournament for the third year in a row. In 2013, the team won its first section title since 1981. The Spuds placed fifth at the state tournament in 2013 and 2014.

The Spuds beat Bemidji 35-19 in the championship match of the 2015 Minnesota Class 3A, Section 8 dual wrestling tournament.

The wrestlers advance to the state team quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Moorhead (18-6) will compete against number-two ranked St. Michael-Albertville (24-2). The team semifinals and finals will follow.

Besides qualifying for state as a team, Moorhead High qualified the following individuals: Wyatt Hanson at 152 pounds, Samuel Grove at 160 pounds, Ben Lien at 182 pounds and Brody Jerome at 220 pounds. The state individual tournament is Feb. 27-28.

Toops has been named wrestling head coach of the year for the section, and assistant coach Dain Kalkbrenner, has been named the Section 8 wrestling assistant coach of the year.
