Moorhead High School students vie for state title in Economics Challenge

April 3, 2015

Minnesota looks to continue its winning tradition in the National Economics Challenge next week as teams from 16 middle and high schools across the state, including Moorhead High School, participate in the state championship on April 7 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. The highest-scoring teams in the advanced placement (AP) and large school divisions will advance to the National Semi-Final round, where the four highest scoring teams in each division advance to the National Final on May 16-18 in New York City. The teams from Moorhead are coached by Michael Kieselbach.

Minnesota students and their coaches have placed in the top four at the National Finals 16 times over the competition’s 14 year history, and have placed in the top two more than any other state. In 2014, Little Falls Community High School placed second in the large school division. Moorhead has placed in the top two twice in the competition’s history.

“A strong background in economics is crucial to success in today’s global economy, and our students’ success in Economics Challenge shows how well-prepared they are,” said Donald Liu, Executive Director of the Minnesota Council on Economic Education (MCEE) at the University of Minnesota. “We have such talented and knowledgeable teachers in Minnesota, and this competition is a tribute to the high quality of teaching in the state.”

This year, students competing in the AP/IB/CIS Division represent Moorhead High School; Central High School, St. Paul; Eden Prairie High School; Edina High School; Mounds View High School; and Technical High School, St. Cloud.

Students competing in the large school division represent Moorhead High School; Cloquet Senior High School; Mounds View High School; Princeton High School; and Valley View Middle School, Edina.

Students competing in the small school division represent Albany High School; Barnesville High School; Frazee High School; Jackson County Central High School; Underwood High School; and United South Central High School.

Economics Challenge began in 1986, when Professor Curt Anderson, retired, University of Minnesota, Duluth, established the competition. In 2001, the competition became a national program. High school teams competed at regional competitions throughout the state and online to receive an invitation to the state finals. Minnesota’s Economics Challenge is supported by the Mosaic Company with the state finals hosted at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. The national Economics Challenge is sponsored by the Council for Economic Education.
