Minnesota children’s author encourages Moorhead students to exercise their imagination

April 15, 2015

Nancy Carlson, Minnesota author and illustrator of 67 children’s books, spoke about using her imagination to come up with ideas for her books when she presented to Probstfield Elementary students on April 15.

Carlson is presenting to Ellen Hopkins Elementary kindergarten students on April 16, and to Robert Asp Elementary kindergarten students on April 17. She presented to S.G. Reinertsen Elementary grades 1-3 students on April 13-14.

After talking about where she got the inspiration for her characters and books, Carlson showed students how to draw a few of her characters. She encouraged students to do a “doodle a day” over the summer to help exercise their imagination, and she suggested students spend time visiting the library this summer.

Carlson’s presentations this week are in conjunction with the Minnesota Kindergarten Association 2015 Spring Conference. The Moorhead area kindergarten teachers are hosting this year’s MKA conference in Moorhead on April 17-18 with an April 17 evening presentation by Carlson, and sessions on teaching math, guided reading, classroom management and more.

Moorhead kindergartners will receive a free book thanks to an Education Minnesota Foundation Grant and local Education Moorhead and MSEA grant and donations.
