Revision to the 2015-16 school year calendar moves spring break

May 4, 2015

At its meeting on April 27, the Moorhead School Board approved a revision to the calendar for the 2015-16 school year. The change affects the March spring break and parent-teacher conferences for grades K-8.

Parent/teacher conferences for the elementary schools and Horizon Middle School will be held the evenings of Monday and Tuesday, March 21-22. There will be no classes for K-12 students on March 23-28 unless March 23 or March 28 is needed as a makeup day.

A change to the state precinct caucus from February to March 1 required this calendar revision. State statute restricts schools from holding activities after 6 p.m. on the caucus night.

Some of the professional development Wednesdays for teachers were adjusted as part of this revision. The rest of the calendar remains the same as when approved in February.

Classes for 2015-16 will begin Sept. 8, 2015. The last day of classes for students is June 2, 2016, unless additional emergency makeup days are needed. March 23 and 28 are scheduled as makeup days, and school will be held on those days if makeup days are needed. If additional days are needed, the calendar will be extended and classes will be scheduled June 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 as needed for makeup days.

Other priorities addressed by the district’s calendar committee in establishing the 2015-16 calendar were having all students in school on the same days, conferences that address schedule needs at the elementary, middle and high school levels, and professional development for teachers and staff spread throughout the school year.

Sept. 1 includes parent communication time for grades 6-8 with time scheduled Sept. 3 for grades 9-12 and elementary parent communication time prior to the start of the school year.

Fall parent/teacher conferences will be held the evenings of Oct. 12 and 13 at all schools. On Oct. 14 there will be conferences in the morning for grades 9-12 and conferences all day for grades K-8. There will be no classes for K-12 students on Oct. 14 for conferences, and there will be no school on Oct. 15-16 because of the Education Minnesota conference.

Moorhead High School will have conferences during the second quarter on the evening of Dec. 10 and during the third quarter on the evening of Feb. 25. Moorhead High will have a final evening conference on April 28.

There are no classes Nov. 25-27, which falls over the Thanksgiving holiday. Winter break will be Dec. 23 through Jan. 1, 2016. Classes resume Monday, Jan. 4, 2016.

There will be no classes for students on Nov. 9 and Jan. 18, which are professional development days for teachers. There is no school on Feb. 15 or March 23-28. March 23 and 28 are scheduled as makeup days if needed. There will be no school on May 30 for Memorial Day.

June 2 is the last day of classes for K-12 students unless the calendar is adjusted. Besides March 23 and 28, the possible emergency makeup days are June 3 and 6-10. School could be scheduled those days if needed. June 3 is the last day for staff unless the end of the year is adjusted. Graduation will be June 5, 2016.
