Moorhead High speech team member places ninth in nation, team earns excellence award

June 22, 2015

The Moorhead High School Speech Team sent nine speakers to this year’s national tournament in Dallas. Seven of the speakers advanced to the Octa-Final round of competition (top 60 in the nation) and one finished ninth in the nation.

Speakers who advanced to the Octa-Final round are Maddy Timm and Adam Bakken in dramatic duo, Rachel Rosson in humor, Laurel Mikkelson in drama, Skyler Klostriech and Abby Dahlberg in dramatic duo, and Jessica Anderson in oratory.

On June 16, after eight rounds of competition, Anderson advanced to the Quarterfinals (round of 30). Anderson spoke in two Quarterfinal rounds, earning a spot in the semifinal round (top 14) where she spoke two more times. Overall, Anderson missed the final round cut by less than 10 points, finishing ninth in the nation. Her finish also guarantees her a spot in next year’s national tournament in Salt Lake City.

Overall, the Moorhead High speech team was awarded the Speech School of Excellence Award, given to the top 20 speech schools in the nation. This is the seventh consecutive year Moorhead High has won the award. Additionally, Head Coach Rebecca Meyer-Larson was awarded her fourth diamond for accumulating more than 10,000 points over a minimum of 20 years of coaching.
