Learn about Moorhead Area Public Schools during State of the District session

October 13, 2015

Community members were involved in the school district’s Community Engagement Initiative and again in last year’s facilities master planning process. Superintendent Lynne Kovash and district leadership team members will discuss the progress on the district’s strategic priorities and plans to move the district forward during the State of the District on Oct. 22. A key topic of the presentation will be the district’s upcoming bond referendum. The session will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 in Probstfield Center for Education Board Room, 2410 14th St. S., Moorhead.

The State of the District is free and open to the public. Preregistration is requested. For more information and to register, contact Moorhead Community Education at 218-284-3400 or register online at https://communityed.moorheadschools.org (class is listed under General Interest).

Moorhead School District voters will vote Nov. 3, 2015, on a $78.2 million bond referendum that, if approved, would provide for growth and learning by:

  • Adding secure entries in all school buildings;
  • Creating adequate and appropriate learning environments for students from early childhood through grade 8;
  • Building a K-4 elementary school for 750 students;
  • Building a grades 5-6 school connected to Horizon Middle School to create a shared grades 5-8 campus, reducing transitions for students;
  • Building an auditorium for school and community use at Horizon Middle School; and
  • Returning Probstfield Center for Education to an early childhood and district education center focused on the needs of our youngest learners.
The $78.2 million in proposed construction projects are designed to add needed space to address the district’s growing elementary and middle school student population, improve security and safety at school entrances, move kindergarten back into the elementary school sites with additional kindergarten classrooms to accommodate all-day kindergarten, and restore spaces for active learning that have been lost the past few years. The owner of a home valued at $150,000 would see a tax impact of less than $9 per month with voter approval of the bond.

A referendum information session hosted by the League of Women Voters will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 at the Moorhead Public Library.
