Several Spud sports striving for stellar seasons

November 6, 2015

Orange and black prevailed last weekend as Spud pride was strong. Moorhead High’s girls swimming team set a school record in the 200-medley relay, the volleyball team advanced to Section 8 semifinals, and the football team won in the state tournament quarterfinals.

This fall Moorhead High girls swimming had its first undefeated dual season since at least 1997. Last weekend, Cora Sather, Emily Haugrud, Katelin Winter and Kenya Arends set a new school record in the 200-medley relay. The team enters section competition on Nov. 13-14.

On Oct. 31, the Spuds volleyball team, which is 13-0 at home and 24-4 for the season, defeated the St. Cloud Tech Tigers in three sets to advance to the next round of the section tournament. They remained unbeaten at home with a win over Sauk Rapids-Rice in the Section 8 semifinals on Nov. 4. The Spuds take on Bemidji in the section championship match at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in Alexandria.

Moorhead High’s football team fought for the win in a high-scoring, multiple-penalty state tournament quarterfinal game on Oct. 31. The Spuds beat Andover 47 to 44. The Spuds take on Saint Thomas Academy at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at Minnetonka High School in a state tournament semifinal game.
