Red River ALC robotics team wins video award

November 7, 2013

The Red River Area Learning Center robotics team took first place for YouTube video and third place for team mascot at the Nov. 1-2 Bison BEST Robotics competition sponsored by NDSU’s College of Engineering and Architecture. Additionally, the team’s engineering notebook earned them a spot in the wild card play-off round.

Team members are Solen Ahmet, Evelyn Serrata, Jordan TwoHearts, Jose Zamarron, Muhamed Zuka, Moses Munoz, Anahi Serrata, Gilbert Munoz and Zoie Gartner. Team advisors are Red River ALC teachers Aura Lee Mohror and Wylie Wisnewski, and mentors are Glen Meyer and Kirk Ogden, engineers from John Deere.

BEST, which stands for “Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology,” is designed to inspire students to consider careers in those fields. This year, the remote-controlled robot needed to build a CPU over the course of three fabrication stages. The robots needed to collect transistors (represented by dowels in the competition) to make gates, put gates together to create integrated circuits, and build their CPU.

Besides the robotics competition, the student teams compete for the BEST Awards which include a project engineering notebook documenting all work they’ve completed, a marketing presentation, the team exhibit and interview, and spirit and sportsmanship.
