Ellen Hopkins, Robert Asp Elementary host two authors

March 22, 2016

Two authors from Minneapolis shared their work with students at Robert Asp and Ellen Hopkins Elementary Schools last month. Michael Hall spoke to grades 1-2 students at both schools while Michael Dahl spoke to grades 3-5 students.

Hall read his book “Frankencrayon,” which is narrated by a pencil, to the students. Hall had studied science and worked in biochemistry before becoming an award-winning graphic designer. After working in design, he began writing picture books. Some of Hall’s other books include “Red,” “It’s an Orange Aardvark!” and “Perfect Square.”

Michael Dahl is the author of more than 300 books for children and young adults, including numerous superhero books. He discussed several of his books with students, including his color books, “Duck Goes Potty,” the Princess Candy series and a creepy series called The Library of Doom. He also has written “The Everything Kid’s Joke Book” and Finnegan Zwake mystery series.

Dahl told students that ideas come from “every book you’ve ever read, movie you’ve watched or game you’ve played.”

“You can write about whatever you like,” he said.
