Moorhead students earn way to We Day

November 18, 2013

More than 20 Horizon Middle School and Moorhead High School students earned their way to We Day after a service project last spring.

We Day Minnesota was held Oct. 8 in the Xcel Energy Center and included speakers like Martin Luther King III and Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan and performers like The Jonas Brothers and Carly Rae Jepson.

We Day is an initiative of Free The Children, an international charity and educational partner that educates, engages and empowers youth to become agents of change. We Day is an educational event tied to the yearlong We Act program, which offers curricular resources and materials to help turn the day’s inspiration into sustained activation. Participants commit to completing one local action and one global action.

Horizon Middle School and Moorhead High School students who earned VIP status at Minnesota’s We Day were part of a May 2013 fundraiser for Free the Children that raised $1,598.

Sayra Crary’s English Learner students read about child labor during their Read 180 class last school year. They were inspired by a young boy in Pakistan who was sold into slavery by his family. For about six years the boy worked in a factory making rugs. After he escaped, he managed to free many other child laborers. At age 12 he was murdered, and his murder was blamed on the carpet factory owners.

His story led the Horizon students to Free the Children.

The EL students were inspired to help make a difference by asking for donations from students and staff at Horizon. The students presented to staff, made morning announcements and showed videos at lunch to encourage students and staff to “bring their change to make a change.”
This fall the students joined thousands of students from across Minnesota for the state’s first We Day. About 20 other Moorhead High School and Red River Area Learning Center students also attended We Day and will be working on global and local service projects this school year.
After Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton proclaimed Tuesday, October 8, 2013, as We Day Minnesota, the audience heard presenters and musicians throughout the day, including several motivational speakers who encouraged the crowd to overcome challenges.
