District to break ground April 18 for grades 5-6 school connected to Horizon Middle School

April 14, 2016

Results of Moorhead Area Public Schools’ long-range facilities planning efforts and passage of the Nov. 3 bond referendum will be evident this spring as ground is broken and the site and foundation work begins for the new 198,573-square-foot grades 5-6 school connected to Horizon Middle School.

Students, School Board members, administrators, teachers, City Council members and other community representatives will turn the first shovels of ground at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 18 at the site of the new school connected to Horizon Middle School, 3601 12th Ave. S., Moorhead. Students attending the groundbreaking are representatives of the current grades 3-6 classes. These students will be grades 5-8 students on the Horizon campus when the new school opens in the fall of 2017. Ambassadors from the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber will celebrate with the school district at the groundbreaking.

The Moorhead School Board will award the first construction bids for the new middle school at a special meeting at 5 p.m. April 14. Bids for bid group one are about 14 percent below estimated costs. Work at the site will begin immediately.

The grades 5-6 school will include two two-story academic wings with four learning communities or houses in each wing. Each team space includes six classrooms, large group and active learning space, special education space and nearby locker bays. The core facilities include a media center, music and art classrooms, a double gymnasium, commons and office space.

Updates on the construction project will be available on the district’s website at www.moorheadschools.org as work progresses.

A groundbreaking for the new K-4 elementary school is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 4.
