Moorhead High Bully Stompers speak out against bullying
November 25, 2013
In October, Horizon Middle School seventh-grade students heard presentations that left some of the students in tears.
The personal stories shared by the Bully Stompers, a group of Moorhead High School SADD members, may have been difficult to listen to, but also brought to life some of the effects of bullying.
The SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) presentations to middle school students are part of the Moorhead Area Public Schools’ efforts to reduce bullying in the district.
The Moorhead High students quizzed the Horizon students using facts about bullying, and then they shared their experiences with bullying and cyberbullying.
“This stuff isn’t funny,” one student told the seventh-graders. “What you say to someone’s face or on the Internet, you can’t take that back. Words hurt, actions hurts, and bullying is not OK.”
The Moorhead High students reminded the seventh-graders to choose their words carefully because they can’t be taken back.
“Think about what you’re going to say because you don’t know what that person’s tipping point is,” one Moorhead High student said.
On Oct. 24, Moorhead Area Public Schools launched its Choose Orange campaign to galvanize district efforts to prevent bullying and support the work of PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center. Staff members and students were encouraged to wear orange to stand up against bullying.
The Choose Orange day was part of the district’s ongoing efforts to prevent bullying. Other efforts include presentations by Moorhead High School SADD students at the elementary schools and middle school, a bullying prevention section on the district website, and an online course for district employees to learn more about bullying and prevention.
