Moorhead teams advance to Destination Imagination Global Finals

Six Moorhead Destination Imagination teams are advancing to Global Finals after qualifying at the 2016 Minnesota Affiliate Destination Imagination Tournament on April 9. Global Finals are May 25-28 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Additionally, Moorhead High students Abigail Johnson, Anthony Johnson, Seamus Neill, David Thibert and Alex Volk received the DIstinguished Leaders Award at the 2016 Destination Imagination Minnesota Affiliate Tournament. The DIstinguished Leader Award recognizes exceptional accomplishment, dedication, innovation, leadership and performance in service of Minnesota’s Destination Imagination program.

The following teams have qualified for Global Finals.

The S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School Destination Imagination team The Structural Six placed fourth in the structural challenge, Musical Mashup, after placing first at the regional tournament to advance to state. The team had to design and build a structure that both supports weight and is a musical instrument. Team members are Aiden Dufault, Megan Hartwig, Graycie Iverson, Caiden Velgersdyk, Nevaeh Kellerman and Charlie Stenehjem.

The S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School Destination Imagination team Team B-Calm placed fourth in the service learning challenge, The Meme Event, at state after placing first at the regional tournament. The team identified, planned and carried out at least one community event and created a live presentation that highlighted the project and impact on the community. Team members are Avery St. Louis, Elianna “Chani” Johnson, Brooke Hoogland, Madeleine Grise and Lily Heskin.

The Horizon Middle School Destination Imagination team Hungry Helpers placed third in the service learning challenge, The Meme Event. The team placed first at the regional tournament to advance to state. Team members are Zane Linn, Jackson Lindberg and Nathan Helgeson.

The Horizon Middle School Destination Imagination team snrocinu wobniar placed first in the improvisational challenge, Close Encounters, at the state tournament after placing first at the regional tournament to advance. Close Encounters required the team perform a four-minute improvisational presentation within a confined space, showing how characters work together to address a newsflash and integrating a stranger and a team-created prop in the presentation. Team members are Maren Twedt, Lydia Flaspohler, Rachel Craig and Emma Craig.

The Moorhead High team, I Can’t Read Their Handwriting, placed first in the scientific challenge, In Plain Sight. The team placed first at the regional tournament to advance to state. The team researched camouflage used by organisms in nature, and team members created and presented a story with a plot twist caused by the use of camouflage. Team members are Abigail Johnson, Alex Volk, Michael Thibert, Emily Stevenson, Mateja Pesek, Emmy Seljevold and Brian Hoffman.

The Moorhead High team, We Don’t Rage, placed third in the technical challenge, Pace of Change. The team placed first at the regional tournament to advance to state. For this challenge, the team designed and built a vehicle that carried a team member across the presentation area multiple times, and team members had to change the vehicle propulsion system and movement method during their story about change. Team members are Anthony Johnson, David Thibert, Seamus Neill and Alex Volk.

The Moorhead High team, The B Team, placed fourth in the improv challenge, Close Encounters and is an alternate to compete in this challenge at Global Finals. Team members are Anthony Johnson, David Thibert, Seamus Neill and Alex Volk.
