Adult Basic Education, Red River ALC move to new site

August 17, 2016

Two school district programs are in new homes this summer. Moorhead Adult Basic Education and Red River Area Learning Center moved to the Globe University building at 2777 34th St. S. in Moorhead in July.

Moorhead Adult Basic Education began classes at the new location on July 11, 2016. According to Tammy Schatz, ABE program manager, the staff and students have adjusted well to this transition.

“The new location provides additional classrooms and an enhanced educational experience to assist the students we serve in a number of areas, including assisting with their educational goals, credential completion, transitioning into post-secondary, English language acquisition, obtaining employment, improving basic skills, and citizenship preparation,” Schatz said.

The larger space has allowed ABE to enroll students from the waiting list in the program.

“Moorhead ABE will periodically host collaborative partners such as the public library and workforce center (RMCEP) to come on-site to provide supplemental classes or services to students,” Schatz said.

This month, Red River Area Learning Center will begin registering students for the fall semester at the new site.

“We are looking forward to starting the new school year,” said Deb Pender, director of alternative programs. “It will be such a pleasure to welcome our students and families to this beautiful new facility. The campus communicates to our students how important and valuable they are to our community. We are grateful to everyone for providing us with this wonderful opportunity to come alongside our young people to help them construct a future that reflects their goals and dreams.”

According to Pender, the new classrooms are bright and spacious, allowing for a broad repertoire of approaches to teaching and learning that facilitate the emergence of creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking. She said the new commons means no longer having to find other spaces in the community to hold special events.

“The commons is warm and inviting,” Pender said. “The site will give us the capacity to host families and guests at our facility.”

Pender is appreciative of the management and businesses located at Bella Center, where Red River ALC was located previously.

“We are grateful for their investment and support of our teachers, students and families over the past 17 years,” she said. “And we look forward to building and sustaining new partnerships at our new location in the coming years.”

Moorhead Area Public Schools will purchase the 31,200-square-foot Globe building through a 25-year lease purchase agreement approved by the School Board earlier this year. Funds that had been used to lease smaller, separate spaces for ABE and Red River ALC will now be used for the lease purchase agreement.
