Nature Play Day invites community to collaborate outdoors
September 21, 2016
Nature Play Day invites the Fargo-Moorhead community to grab shovels, get outdoors and contribute to the development of the new nature play park at Ellen Hopkins Elementary School from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016.
The event in the south field at Ellen Hopkins Elementary School welcomes all ages to play in the dirt and get creative with activities such as tree planting, leaf art, face painting and creating garden pavers to leave behind and “make your mark on the park.”
Nature Play Day is a free event sponsored by the Hopkins Parent Teacher Advisory Council. Plenty of fresh fruit and water will be available. Guests are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the morning.
Hopkins Elementary is the site for a proposed nature play space, dedicated for use by children and adults of all physical abilities. The Center for Sustainable Building Research’s Design for Community Resilience program developed a master plan for the space in collaboration with students, staff, parents and community members.
A nature play space consists of using natural elements and objects to create an interactive and unique play space. Examples of some elements found in a nature play space would be logs, sand pits and native plants. Nature play spaces encourage cooperative play, help children develop basic motor skills and foster individual creativity.
