Spuds football team wins before hometown crowd

Even on a rain-soaked Friday night last week, the stands were filled with fans and the community atmosphere was present at Moorhead High’s Jim Gotta Stadium. This is part of an effort to make Moorhead High School’s home football games events for the community to enjoy.
“Over the past few years one of the goals of the football program has been to create a truly unique game night experience for all who attend,” said Dean Haugo, Moorhead High School activities director.
On Sept. 16, the girls soccer team finished its rain-delayed game, and then the Moorhead Spuds football team took the field. The Spuds beat Sartell-St. Stephen 24-8 to get their first win of the season in front of the hometown community.
Efforts to create community events at the home football games include recognizing youth football players before the game and during halftime. A middle school student section called the Orange Hole was created, similar to the high school students’ Black Hole. During each game individuals from the district or community are recognized, each elementary school is featured at a home game, and veterans and reunion groups have been honored.
“Other activities range from pre-game tailgating to live music at halftime to post-game fireworks,” Haugo said.
Any extra events are funded by corporate sponsors secured through the work of the Unity Council, which is the football parent leadership group.
