Hopkins raises $1,300 for United Way with penny war
October 28, 2016
Students, families and staff members at Ellen Hopkins Elementary School raised $1,300 for the United Way through a penny war earlier this month.
Diana Cobbs’ second-grade class won the penny war and the opportunity to present the $1,300 check to United Way representatives during a brief presentation Oct. 18. Representatives from the United Way thanked the students and said the money raised by the school could provide 87 backpacks of school supplies or 650 books to help kids learn to read.
From Oct. 10-13, each classroom at Hopkins worked to fill its penny jar. Silver coins could be used to sabotage another classroom’s penny jar as classrooms battled for the right to present the donation to the United Way.
