Horizon students learn about voting process and electoral system with mock election
November 8, 2016
Horizon Middle School students overwhelmingly supported Hillary Clinton in the Nov. 8 mock election held at the school. She received 402 electoral votes to Donald Trump’s 136.
Horizon social studies teachers teamed with media specialist Kelly Koppang to run the mock election. The mock election emphasized understanding of the electoral system and the voting process, not the popular vote, Koppang said.
Students were assigned to be from all the states before they voted for their candidate. Depending on how the students assigned to each state voted determined which candidate received the state’s electoral votes.
Students came to the media center to vote throughout the day. There they found their names and signed the roster, received the ballot, voted and received their “I voted” sticker.
“Our goal is to help create lifelong voters, both by demystifying the voting process and by making this a fun experience for our students,” Koppang said.
