District’s operating levy renewal passes; two incumbents, two new members elected to School Board

November 15, 2016

Voters in the Moorhead Area Public Schools approved the district’s operating levy renewal 12,274 (64.2%) to 6,853 (35.8%). The ballot question required a simple majority to pass. School district election results were canvassed by the School Board on Nov. 14 and are now official.

Results for Moorhead Area Public Schools’ Nov. 8 operating levy renewal are on the district’s website at www.moorheadschools.org/levy.

Revenue from renewal of the operating levy will address five priority areas identified by the School Board.
  • Support learning and operate our new and existing schools for our growing student enrollment.
  • Maintain average class sizes.
  • Provide a source of stable and predictable revenue to avoid reductions.
  • Maintain and replace technology equipment.
  • Maintain access to education programs including world languages and early childhood.
Incumbents Matt Valan and Scott Steffes will be joined on the School Board by new members Cassidy Bjorklund and Melissa Burgard. The four were elected to four-year terms on the School Board following the Nov. 8 election.

Valan received 7,063 votes and Steffes received 6,391 votes to be reelected to second terms. Cassidy Bjorklund received 7,045 votes and Melissa Burgard received 5,554 votes to be elected to first terms on the board.

The new board members will take their seats on the board at the first meeting in January 2017.

Other candidates were Bert Chamberlain, who received 4,324 votes; Cherie L. Clark, who received 3,775 votes; Ruel C. Johnson, who received 2,454 votes; Scott Kostohryz, who received 2,675 votes; David Marquardt, who received 5,387 votes; Keith Vogt, who received 4,552 votes; and Tina Walker, who received 3,929 votes.
