Horizon Middle School presents retelling of classic in “The Wiz”

February 14, 2017

Moorhead’s Horizon Middle School presents the “The Wiz” at 7 p.m. March 2, 3 and 4 and 2 p.m. March 5 at the Moorhead High School auditorium, 2300 4th Ave. S. The March 2 performance will be sign language interpreted.

“The Wiz” is a musical retelling of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” with a book by William F. Brown and an infectious, funky and soulful score by Charlie Smalls. Best known for the 1978 film version starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, “The Wiz” has been delighting audiences for decades.

“The Wiz” brings a renewed relevance to a timeless American classic. The show is appropriate for adults and children and teaches the lessons of rising above one’s background, managing the expectations of others, all while learning the value of family, self, and home. This show holds a beautiful message for all students while connecting to classic literature.

The production is directed by Kelly Dubois-Gerchak, with music and vocal direction from Kathy Ferreira and Sue Knorr, pit orchestra conductor Dr. David Ferreira and choreography by Patrick Kasper.

Tickets are $9 for adults and $5.50 for students. Reserve tickets online at https://www.moorheadschools.org/tix or by calling the box office at 218-284-2255.
