Horizon Middle School helps kick off United Way School Supply Drive to support area students

July 13, 2017

With backpacks and school supplies displayed nearby, Principal Jeremy Larson of Horizon Middle School and Principal John Nelson of Fargo’s Ben Franklin Middle School helped the United Way of Cass-Clay kick off this year’s School Supply Drive July 11 at Horizon Middle School East Campus. This is the 19th year of the school supply drive, which runs from July 11-28. Backpacks and supplies will be distributed Aug. 5 and 8.

“Our community helps impact thousands of children’s lives,” said Kristi Huber, United Way of Cass-Clay president. “Last year we had 5,854 backpacks filled and put in the hands of children in our community.”

In 2016, students from 65 local schools received backpacks and supplies. Moorhead High School and Horizon Middle School were the top two schools that received backpacks with 277 going to Moorhead High students and 231 being given to Horizon students.

Larson said students of all backgrounds come together at Horizon, and each student has a story.

“The School Supply Drive gives students an opportunity to come to school and have the necessary tools they need,” Larson said. “United Way is a great support to ensure all kids come at a level playing field and are ready to learn.”

Nelson shared how some families are challenged to pay for school supplies. “This gives these families more opportunities,” he said.

“Last year, 79% of the students who received supplies self-reported being enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program,” said Megan Jenson, United Way community impact manager and School Supply Drive lead. “We know we are impacting a population in need through the United Way School Supply Drive.”

This year, United Way needs the community to step forward and help them equip 5,800 local students with backpacks full of school supplies.

Additionally, Moorhead Schools is collecting supplies in the district office at Probstfield Center for Education until noon on July 28.

Community members also may make monetary donations, Jenson said.

“While donating supplies is extremely important, you can make the biggest impact by contributing financially to the drive,” she said. “We are able to purchase backpacks and supplies in bulk, leveraging your investment to make donated dollars go further.”

Backpacks and supplies will be distributed to students and families in need on:
Saturday, August 5 from 8-11:30 a.m. at the FARGODOME
Tuesday, August 8 from 4-7 p.m. at the FARGODOME

Any K-12 student attending school in Cass or Clay County is eligible to receive a backpack and school supplies. Families must bring a form of ID to the FARGODOME and a completed registration form. Registration forms and information for families in need is available on the United Way website.

All information about the drive can be found on the United Way website at https://www.unitedwaycassclay.org/how-we-help/prepare-children-to-succeed/school-supply-drive.

“We could not make this happen without the outpouring of community support,” Huber said of the School Supply Drive.

Additionally, Matt Leiseth, president of Hornbacher’s, presented the United Way with a check for $29,025.46 from this year’s Gobble It Up lunch.

“All the proceeds from Gobble It Up go directly to the good work of the United Way,” he said. “Everything we do every day can have a huge impact.”

Huber said the recent Gobble It Up fundraiser at Hornbacher’s will support all four of the United Way’s goals – to reduce hunger and homelessness, prepare children to succeed, help people be independent, and lift people out of poverty.

“It’s a fantastic day for our community,” she said. “It’s a fantastic day for kids in our community, and with your support we will be able to make this the best first day for kids across Cass and Clay counties.”
