Moorhead High volleyball team advances to state

November 7, 2017

The Moorhead High School Spuds battled the Willmar Cardinals in a five-set dual on Nov. 4 to win the Class 3A, Section 8 championship and advance to the volleyball state competition.
Moorhead started the game fast winning the first two sets 25-18 and 25-10. The Cardinals battled back taking the next two sets 25-20 and 25-21, which forced the tie-breaking fifth set to find the winner. Moorhead came back strong in the last set to win 15-6 and advance to state for the third consecutive year. This makes it four trips to state out of the last five years for the Spuds.
Senior Lexi Gilbertson led the Spuds with 20 kills. Junior Brook Carney added 17 kills, and juniors Jalen Ennen and Brooke Walthall each added seven kills to the tallies. Senior setter Kortney Carney had 49 set assists and three solo blocks during the game, and she scored three services aces. Brooke Carney also had four solo blocks during the five-set run.
Volleyball state tournament action begins Thursday, Nov. 9 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Moorhead will play against third-seed Champlin Park at 11 a.m.
