Moorhead High School winter sports previewed

November 22, 2017

Moorhead High School’s winter sports seasons are beginning. Read season previews for boys hockey, girls hockey, boys basketball, girls basketball, dance, gymnastics, boys swimming and diving, wrestling, boys and girls Nordic skiing, and boys and girls weightlifting.

Boys Hockey: In the 2016-17 regular season the team had a record of 19-3-3. Cole O’Connell, Ethan Frisch and Carter Randklev are just a few of the key returners for Moorhead. The Spuds are excited for another chance at the state tournament and are looking to play on the final day of the season once again next March. The 2017-18 campaign begins Nov. 24 against Lakeville North in Bloomington.

Girls Hockey: Girls hockey had a record of 9-13-3 in the 2016-17 season. Brenna Mjoness, Jordie Egerdahl, Emma Cullen, Ahnie Spanier, Kylie Harrom, Paige Schmidt and Emily Meyer are key returners. Senior Emma Cullen is excited to get back to work with the team this season. “We have a new coach and a young team,” Cullen said. “We’re going to work hard and see where the season takes us.” The Spuds opened the season at home against Thief River Falls on Nov. 11. The next home game is Dec. 2.

Boys Basketball: The Spuds ended the 2016-17 season with a record of 3-23. Alend Alemadi and Drew Hagen are just a few of the key returners this season. The Spuds open the season at Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1.

Girls Basketball: The girls basketball team concluded its season with a record of 24-8-0. Sammi Haiby, Megan Haugo and Ayana Blythe are some of the team's key returners. The season opens Nov. 24 at Elk River. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Dance: Last year the team placed second in Varsity Jazz at the Detroit Lakes competition, and placed 11th at sections in Jazz and Kick. A few of the returners include Taylor Melton, Hayley Steffes, Carly Newhouse, Taylor Foss, Amaya Dullea, Bella DeJean and Emmie Fierstine.

Gymnastics: Riley Kvalevog, Amaya Cromwell, Hannah Jastram and Paityn Ness are returning this season. The team is young, so the Spuds are excited for future years. The season opens at Fargo South on Dec. 1.

Boys Swim and Dive: Erik Dougherty and Matt Malusky are two of the swim team’s returners. Last year the Spuds tied for fourth at sections. “Over the past few years we’ve consistently been doing better,” Malusky said. The season opens Dec. 12 at Fargo North.

Wrestling: This season a few of the returners include Clay Hall, Riley Schock, Hayden Netland and Ryan Luthi. With the graduation of state champion Samuel Grove, the Spuds are excited to see what the season has to offer. The season begins on Nov. 30 at home against West Fargo. The meet will start at 6 p.m.

Boys and Girls Nordic Skiing: Kate Ludwig, Sofie Overturf and Lexi Maddux, as well as Dawson Strom, Daniel Davies and Jack Lee are a few of the returners. Last season the ski team performed well all year. With the popularity of the sport growing, the Spuds are excited to see how this season will go. The first meet of the year is Saturday, Dec. 9 at Ely.

Boys and Girls Weightlifting: Terrance Weah, Owen Cullen and Jordan Nichols are returning to weightlifting this year. Nichols is excited to start the season and growing the sport. “I think the weightlifting team will have good numbers this year, which will help us be more successful by adding to our combined total at meets,” Nichols said.
