School Board approves calendar for 2018-19 school year

February 21, 2018

At its meeting on Feb. 12, the Moorhead School Board approved the calendar for the 2018-19 school year. Classes will begin Sept. 4, 2018.

The last day of classes for students is June 4, 2019, unless additional emergency makeup days are needed. April 22 is scheduled as a makeup day, and school will be held then if a makeup day is needed. If additional days are needed, the calendar will be extended and classes will be scheduled June 5, 6, 7 or later as needed for makeup days.

Other priorities addressed by the district’s calendar committee in establishing the 2018-19 calendar were having all students in school on the same days, conferences that address schedule needs at the elementary, middle and high school levels, and professional development for teachers and staff spread throughout the school year.

The 2018-19 calendar uses half-day and full-day professional development to allow training, practice and reflection throughout the school year. The professional development time is scheduled for Sept. 28, Nov. 12, Jan. 21, Feb. 15 and April 18. There will be no classes for all students on these days.

Aug. 28 includes parent communication time for grades 7-8 prior to the start of the school year, while Aug. 30 includes parent communication time for grades K-6 and 9-12.

Fall parent-teacher conferences will be held the evenings of Oct. 15 and 16 at all schools. On Oct. 17 there will be conferences in the morning for grades K-12. There will be no classes for K-12 students on Oct. 17 for conferences, and there will be no school on Oct. 18-19 because of the MEA conference.

Parent-teacher conferences for the elementary schools and Horizon Middle School Campus will be held the evenings of March 4 and 5. On March 6 there will be conferences in the morning for grades K-12. There will be no classes for K-12 students on March 6-8.

Moorhead High School will have conferences during the second quarter on the evening of Dec. 6 and during the fourth quarter on the evening of April 30.

There are no classes Nov. 21-23, which falls over the Thanksgiving holiday. Winter break will be Dec. 22 through Jan. 1, 2019. Classes resume Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.

There is no school on Feb. 18, April 19 and April 22. April 22 is scheduled as the first makeup day if needed. There will be no school on May 27 for Memorial Day.

June 4 is the last day of classes for K-12 students unless the calendar is adjusted. Graduation will be June 2, 2019. Students in grade 12 will not attend school on June 3 and 4 if all requirements have been completed. Besides April 22, the possible emergency makeup days are June 5, 6, 7 or later. School could be scheduled those days if needed. June 5 is the last day for staff unless the end of the year is adjusted.
