Moorhead High boys hockey team wins to advance to section final game

February 27, 2018

During the boys hockey section tournament game against Rogers on Feb. 20, Moorhead High’s Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe pops one in behind the goalie working off assists by Parker Dronen and Parker Larson. The Spuds dominated the Royals in a 12-0 blowout. Carter Randklev and Tommy Horan both scored hat tricks, and 11 Spuds scored either goals or assists. Dronen and Larson each had four assists for the Spuds, Cole O’Connell had a goal and three assists, and Jack Stetz added three more assists.

The Spuds advanced to the semi-final section tournament game against St. Cloud on Feb. 24. Neither team scored in the first period as St. Cloud came out playing hard and fast. St. Cloud kept the Spuds from scoring while pushing the pace at both ends. Moorhead found the back of the net early in the second period, scoring two quick goals in the first two and a half minutes of play. The Spuds never looked back and finished the game with a 5-0 win. Goalie Lance Leonard had 18 saves for the Spuds.

The Spuds are scheduled to play St. Michael-Albertville in Bemidji on Feb. 28 for the Class 2A Section 8 title. This will be the 18th consecutive trip to the section finals for the Spuds. A win would return the Spuds to the state hockey tournament for a ninth try at the title.
