One final shot: Moorhead High boys hockey season ends

March 7, 2018

Moorhead High senior forward Carter Randklev, a Mr. Hockey finalist, fired the last shot of his high school career. The shot with one second remaining was the Spuds’ last chance to tie the boys hockey section championship game against St. Michael-Albertville on Feb. 28.

The Spuds lost the Class 2A Section 8 Hockey Championship game 6-5 in a stunner. Spuds fans anticipated another trip to state, but it was not to be.

After the Spuds scored two quick goals in the first period, STMA went to work scoring two unanswered goals each in the first and second periods.

The Spuds came out blazing in the third period, and Randklev scored the third goal for the Spuds at 0:38 seconds. The Knights popped off two more goals late in the third period.

Moorhead was down by three goals with 2 minutes, 19 seconds remaining to play. Moorhead pulled goalie Lance Leonard and with six Spuds in the Knights’ end of the arena, Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe and Cole O’Connell were able to each score a goal to cut the lead to 6-5.

Then in the last few seconds of the game, Randklev wound up to take that final shot, and a Knight slid on his belly in between Randklev and the goalie. The shot was fired. It may or may not have been touched by the Knight, and the puck went high and missed the net.

Overtime may have had a different ending for the Spuds, who ended their season at 20-8. The Spuds shut out both Rogers and St Cloud on their trip to the section final.
