Moorhead Destination Imagination team advances to Global Finals

May 1, 2018

A Moorhead Destination Imagination team, the Big Butter Sticks, is advancing to Global Finals after placing first at the 2018 Minnesota Destination Imagination Tournament on April 21 in Champlin Park, Minn.

Several fundraisers are scheduled to help the fifth-grade team travel to Global Finals on May 23-26 in Knoxville, Tenn.

The team is raising funds for their trip through a hat day on May 4 at Horizon Middle School West Campus, free will offerings, and appeals to area businesses. Anyone interested in contributing to their fundraising efforts can send checks to Moorhead Area Public Schools with DI Globals in the memo line to Probstfield Center for Education, 2410 14th St. S., Moorhead, MN 56560.

At the state tournament, the Horizon West team placed first in the service learning challenge, Inside Impact. Team members are Caiden Velgersdyk, Nevaeh Kellerman, Aaron Volk and Megan Hartwig. Team manager is Carrie Hartwig.

As part of the challenge, the team had to identify, design, carry out and evaluate a project that addressed a need in a real community. Team members created a presentation, including infographics, that highlighted the project and the impact it made.

Destination Imagination is a project-based learning program where teams of students use creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills to solve challenges.
