Moorhead School Board member Bill Tomhave named to All-State School Board

November 12, 2014

Moorhead School Board member Dr. Bill Tomhave has been named to the 2015 All-State School Board, which is the Minnesota School Boards Association’s (MSBA) most prestigious award.

Each year, MSBA’s awards committee selects up to seven individual board members to the All-State School Board. There are nearly 2,300 school board members in Minnesota. Board members are nominated by superintendents, fellow board members, parents or community members for their outstanding contributions to public education. Tomhave is one of seven board members chosen for the award this year.

“During my years of involvement with the Minnesota School Boards Association, people selected to the All-State School Board have had distinguished records of exemplary service to their local schools and to the state organization,” Tomhave said. “For me to receive such recognition from my peers is truly humbling. I hope that my ongoing service to Moorhead Area Public Schools is worthy of this honor.”

Tomhave will receive the award during a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, at MSBA’s annual Leadership Conference at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

“The All-State School Board represents the highest example of board service. These are school board members who are committed to student achievement, determined to build support for their local schools and unwavering in their pursuit of what’s best for students,” MSBA Executive Director Kirk Schneidawind said.

Tomhave’s commitment to education has been the focus of his professional life for more than 40 years. Tomhave is a professor of mathematics at Concordia College, and he has been actively involved with the district even before being elected to the School Board in 2001. Since joining the board, Tomhave has attended nearly 400 hours of MSBA training; he has served as board treasurer, vice chair and chair and is currently serving as vice chair again; and he participates on district and school committees and attends school events.

“Bill has been an exemplary board member,” said Dr. Lynne Kovash, superintendent of Moorhead Area Public Schools. “He has contributed to the leadership on the board, as well as through his leadership on other boards and as an ambassador for MSBA.”

Criteria for the All-State School Board award includes MSBA training; strong leadership; excellence in boardsmanship; communication skills; visionary thinking; demonstration of concern for students, staff and taxpayers; and support for the nomination from stakeholders.

MSBA is a private nonprofit organization that provides management support, board training, cost-saving programs, advocacy, research and referral for Minnesota’s public schools.
