Moorhead High girls soccer team takes second in section 8AA to end season

October 29, 2018

Eighty minutes of regulation play, 20 minutes of overtime play, and seven rounds of shootouts was what it took to end the Class 2A girls soccer section tournament title game Oct. 16 in St. Michael. The No. 3-seeded Spuds lost 4-5 in the shootout to the top-rated St. Michael-Albertville team. Moorhead goalie Emily Soukup had 28 saves.

The Spuds, who had five consecutive shutouts going into the game, ended their season 15-4, which tied the 2004 record for most wins.

Scoring this season was led by junior captain Lauren Hodny with 20 goals and eight assists, followed closely by sophomore Olivia Watson, who had 19 goals and eight assists.

“These two players combined to score more than half of the team’s total goals,” said head coach Nicole Wiesner.

Maria Zanotti, the Spuds only freshman, led with 11 assists on the season.

“The team also was strong defensively tallying 10 shutouts,” Wiesner said. “Emily Soukup, sophomore goalkeeper, had an amazing season ending with a 91% save rating in the net.”

“After only losing four seniors this season, section 8AA better be on the lookout for the Spuds to take the championship next year,” Wiesner said.
