Hopkins raises $923.48 for United Way with penny war

November 19, 2018

Students, families and staff members at Ellen Hopkins Elementary School raised $923.48 for the United Way through the school’s fifth annual penny war in October.

Christen Rich’s fourth-grade class won the penny war and the opportunity to present the $923.48 check to United Way representatives during a brief presentation Oct. 30. Representatives from the United Way thanked the students and said the money raised by the school could provide backpacks of school supplies for 46 students.

During the three-day penny war, each classroom at Hopkins worked to fill its penny jar. Silver coins could be used to sabotage another classroom’s penny jar as classrooms battled for the right to present the donation to the United Way.
