Moorhead boys hockey tops East Grand Forks

January 15, 2019

Moorhead High defenseman Nick Searls anticipates the puck in front of the net, and Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe (4) and Luke Gramer (3) are on hand to assist in the Jan. 8 boys hockey game. The Spuds defeated Class 1A’s fourth-ranked East Grand Forks 4-3 at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Gramer scored Moorhead’s first goal in the first period with assists by Michael Overbo and Lukas Feir. Kyler Kleven also scored in the first with assists by Overbo and Henkemeyer-Howe. EGF scored twice in the second period to tie the game.

Moorhead came out strong in the third with a Tommy Horan goal at 1:34. Henkemeyer-Howe and Carter Johnson got the assists. Nolan Westra scored the fourth goal with an assist by Kleven to bring the score to 4-2. EGF scored once more and pulled their goalie toward the end, but it was not enough to stop the Spuds as they took the win over the Green Wave. Spuds goalie Ethan Miller had 20 saves.

On Jan. 12 at the Moorhead Sports Center, Moorhead and Bloomington Jefferson skated to a tie game as no one scored in overtime. After a scoreless first period, Moorhead started the scoring in the second with a goal by Kleven. The Jaguars fired back with a goal to tie. In the third period, Moorhead’s Westra scored to give the Spuds a 2-1 lead, but again the Jags scored, forcing the game into overtime. The Spuds are at 9-6-1 for the season.

The Spuds play at 6 p.m. Jan. 17 against St. Michael-Albertville for the fourth in a stretch of seven home games. They host Duluth East at 5 p.m. Jan. 19 and Roseau at 6 p.m. Jan. 22.
