District sets April 22 as school day to make up for missed day

February 12, 2019

Moorhead Area Public Schools has scheduled Monday, April 22, 2019, as an instructional day as makeup for the Feb. 7 weather-related school closure day. April 22 was identified on the 2018-19 calendar as the first emergency makeup day.

A decision has not been made related to making up the Jan. 29-30, 2019, closures for extreme cold. No decision is being made at this time since there are still several weeks left of potential winter weather closings. This also allows time to determine whether the legislature intends to consider a special waiver for districts for the 2018-19 school year related to required student contact hours.

It has been reported in the media that Gov. Walz does not want to penalize districts for erring on the side of student safety and canceling school due to extreme cold. However, since that time it has been made clear that authority for such decisions resides with the legislature as the requirements about student contact hours are in state statute.

Two-hour late starts do not factor into lost student contact hours according to state requirements. They do, however, factor into lost learning time, and will be a consideration as the district considers whether additional makeup days need to be scheduled.
