February 12, 2019
Moorhead High’s Maleeck Harden-Hayes goes up for a slam dunk in first-half action of the home boys basketball game against Monticello on Feb. 9. Harden-Hayes became the 10th boys basketball player in Spud history to reach 1,000 career points.
The Spuds went into halftime with a 17-point lead, but the Magic came out with a vengeance in the second half, scoring 23 points to Moorhead’s eight and sinking five three-point shots.
To the delight of the crowd, Harden-Hayes scored his 1,000th point with 3:35 remaining in the game. Many 1,000 signs were waved, and the student section had four students with the 1,000 number on their chests.
Monticello got within five points, but the Spuds held them off, scoring on free throws to end the game. Five Spuds scored in double digits in the 88-77 win over the Magic. Drew Hagen led the team with 23 points for the Spuds. Quentin Hegg added 21 points. Harden-Hayes scored 15 points. Belind Alemadi and Trey Feeney added 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Spuds were 16-3 for the season as of Feb. 11.
The Spuds play away games Feb. 12, 15 and 18 and return home to play Sartell at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 at Concordia College.
