Moorhead High boys basketball team ends season in section semifinals

March 15, 2019

The Spuds played Rogers in a boys basketball quarterfinal game in the Class 4A, Section 8 tournament at Moorhead High School on March 5 that saw both teams neck-and-neck through the first half and into the second.

Moorhead High’s Quentin Hegg stole the ball twice in a row and scored on layups to give the Spuds a four-point lead. Moments later Maleeck Harden-Hayes broke free and slammed home a dunk that brought the home fans to their feet.  That shifted the momentum to the Spuds as they went on a 10-3 run and never looked back, taking the 71-59 win over the Royals.

Hegg scored 13 points in the game and had three steals. Drew Hagen put up 11 points and had seven rebounds, while Brady Walthall came off the bench to score 11 points. Donnovin Hinsz had four points and led in rebounds with eight. Trey Feeney also had seven rebounds and was able to chip in four points. Harden-Hayes led the scoring for the Spuds with 24 points, before he left the game with a bruised back after a collision under the basket with Rogers guard Hunter Stull.

Harden-Hayes was back at it on March 8 for the semifinal game against Buffalo that was moved to Monticello due to the weather forecast. After falling behind by 19 points early in the second half and suffering from foul trouble, the Spuds began to chip away at the lead. Moorhead managed to close the lead to nine points several times, but just couldn’t get over the hump. The Spuds battled hard to the final buzzer, but were unable to defeat the Bison, losing their final game of the season 84-71.

Hagen had nine points, and scored his 1,000th career point during the game. Walthall led the Spuds with 18 points. Harden-Hayes added 14 points, and Hegg notched up 11 points. Feeney came off the bench to score eight points and led the Spuds in rebounds with seven. Hinsz added eight points to the Spuds’ tally. The Spuds ended their season at 21-6.
