Mabrouk named Dorothy Dodds Teacher of the Year

May 16, 2019

The influence of her parents led Maisa Mabrouk to become a teacher.

“Both my parents were teachers,” Mabrouk said. “I admired their hard work, dedication, and the faith they had in their students.”

Mabrouk has worked as an early childhood special education teacher for Moorhead Area Public Schools since 2014, first with the district’s Jump Start Preschool and most recently at Dorothy Dodds Elementary School. She was named this year’s Dorothy Dodds Teacher of the Year.

Mabrouk earned a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature in Jordan and a bachelor’s degree in early childhood special education from Minnesota State University Moorhead. Prior to working for Moorhead Area Public Schools, Mabrouk was a preschool classroom teacher and family support for Lakes and Prairies Head Start from 2008 to 2014.

“For me, teaching is a long process that requires patience and repeated practice until the students reach their goals,” Mabrouk said. “My daily goal is to work as hard as I can with my students while maintaining high expectations. “

According to Robin Grooters, principal at Dorothy Dodds Elementary, Mabrouk exemplifies the qualities of Dorothy Dodds Teacher of the Year.

“She makes a real difference in the lives and outcomes for children and families,” Grooters said. “She is a valuable team member and experienced teacher, and she contributes meaningfully to the larger school community.”

In addition to teaching, Mabrouk has served on school committees for literacy intervention and paraprofessionals.

“Maisa has taken the initiative to work with our special education staff to provide training and solve difficult situations,” Grooters said. “She has established herself as leader within the teacher group and is a valued and respected professional at Dorothy Dodds Elementary.”

As a special education teacher, Mabrouk works closely with the classroom teachers to provide support for students in the classroom.

“We discuss current strengths, concerns and support needed to move our students forward,” she said.

Grooters has worked closely with Mabrouk about programming design for students.

“Maisa exhibits leadership and organizational skills, which are important to both our building and to our students and families,” Grooters said. “She is always proactive in her support to students, families and staff. She has done an outstanding job of putting her talents and experience to work.”
