October 22, 2019
Moorhead High’s Caden Triggs punts the ball during an early season football game. Moorhead split games the last two weeks, dropping a heartbreaker to St. Cloud Tech on Oct. 11, and ending with a win against Bemidji on Oct. 16.
In St. Cloud, Moorhead took command of the Tigers, scoring on the first possession of the game and again after an onside kick. Keanan Wendt scored both touchdowns for the Spuds, and Triggs added the extra point and a field goal to end the first half with Moorhead up 17-0.
The Tigers took over during the second half and converted the two-point conversions on two touchdowns to bring the score to 17-16. The Spuds had another chance to score, but lost the ball in a quarterback sneak with the Tigers taking it back 73 yards for a touchdown and two-point conversion to take the lead 17-24. Moorhead had one final try with a minute remaining but fumbled the ball.
On Oct. 16 Moorhead played the undefeated Lumberjacks in Bemidji. The Spuds’ defense held the Jacks on their first possession. Trey Feeney connected with Lee Karfear to put the Spuds up 7-0 with the extra point by Triggs. Bemidji scored but was not able to convert the point.
With minutes to play in the second quarter, Feeney found Drew Hagen in the end zone and with the extra point by Triggs the Spuds extended their lead to 14-6 at the half.
Both defenses played tough during the second half. In the fourth quarter, Moorhead’s Hayden Netland came up with an interception in midfield. The Spuds had a 3rd and 18 situation, and Feeney answered the call, finding Brady Walthall over the middle and a 33-yard reception. Triggs knocked in a 25-yard fieldgoal to make the score 17-6. Karfear sealed the win by intercepting the ball.
The Spuds play St. Cloud Apollo at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at Moorhead High in the first round of the Section 8, 5A football tournament. They won 49-6 and will play at Alexandria at 2 p.m. Oct. 26.
