Spuds win shutout against Brainerd in hockey home opener

December 5, 2019

After stealing the puck, Moorhead High’s Cullen Gess scores his second goal against Brainerd during the boys hockey season home opener Nov. 26 at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Last year’s top line of seniors was replaced by Caden Triggs, Carter Johnson and Gess, who combined scored five of the six goals for the Spuds and each had an assist. Goalie Hudson Hodges stopped 19 shots on goal in the 6-0 shutout win.

Coach Jon Ammerman is looking for good things from returning players Michael Overbo, Max Dronen and Lukas Feir. Overbo opened up the scoring for the Spuds with an assist from Dronen at just over a minute of play in the first period. Triggs made it 2-0 on a breakaway, and Johnson scored off a rebound on a power play in the first period.

In the second period, Gess scored his first goal on a pass from Triggs after Triggs intercepted a pass and shot it back to Gess. That was followed by Gess’s unassisted goal about a minute later. In the third period, Gess and Wyatt Gunkel assisted Triggs as he put away his second goal of the game.

Moorhead plays at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at Buffalo before returning to home ice at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 for a matchup against Roseau.
