Moorhead Area Public School Hires Director of Equity and Inclusion

November 17, 2020

Moorhead Area Public Schools announces that Matuor Alier has been hired as Director of Equity and Inclusion, a new position that is part of the district’s commitment to create an educational environment of inclusiveness, equity and respect for all people. The Director of Equity and Inclusion will provide leadership and advocacy for programs and services to support students and faculty in the areas of equity and inclusion. This position will promote a culture of diversity and inclusion embracing differences as a strategic opportunity towards leading the District’s efforts to build a culture of equality and empowerment for all students, families, employees and the community.

Alier comes to the district with experience in the social services and community healthcare fields. He currently chairs the Fargo Human Relations commission and served as Executive Director for the South Sudanese Community Development Organization and holds positions on numerous community based councils and committees. Alier speaks six languages and holds a Bachelor degree from Pennsylvania State University.

“We are extremely fortunate to welcome Mr. Alier to our team. His lived and learned experiences, along with his strong community networks and passion for students will help us to more richly fulfill our mission as a district to maximize the potential of every student to thrive in a changing world,” said Dr. Brandon Lunak, Superintendent.

Alier added, “I’m humbled and honored to be trusted with this position. Creating an even more equitable education system will help all our students develop the knowledge and skills they need to be engaged and become productive members of our community. More importantly, giving all our children an equitable start leads to better economic and social outcomes for individual students, our communities, our City of Moorhead and our nation.”

Alier is a proud father of five young children. He lives in Fargo with his wife and kids. They enjoy spending quality family time together including biking to the neighborhood park and playing in their backyard.
