Lloyd W. Paulson

A Parkers Prairie, Minn., native, Lloyd Paulson grew up on his family’s farm a few miles from town and graduated from Parkers Prairie High School in 1942. Paulson served in the Army in 1945, and in 1946 he served in the Philippines, reaching the rank of staff sergeant.
After farming for a while, Paulson entered the hardware business. He was hired by Scheels in the Fargo-Moorhead area, moved to the Wheaton, Minn., store, and then returned to Moorhead in 1962 to serve as manager/partner. Paulson retired in 1980 after 28 years with Scheels. During that time, he was named top store manager four times. Paulson is still a stockholder in the company.
Paulson is a generous supporter of youth and the community. Paulson and his wife Bev helped found the Moorhead Area Education Foundation, which has provided 1,389 Moorhead High graduates with $1,127,950 in scholarships since 1992. Paulson recruited the original MAEF board of directors, served as first president, oversaw writing of the bylaws and did the initial fundraising for the endowment fund of the foundation, with a goal of $1,152,000. He oversaw the incorporation process, recruited the Moorhead High Key Club and Student Council to make phone calls for the annual phonathon, and has personally funded two scholarships. The foundation’s endowment is just above $1 million, and the phonathons have raised a total of $431,202.
Paulson has provided financial and volunteer support to many local organizations, including Scandinavian Hjemkomst Festival, Nordic Culture Clubs, River Keepers, and Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center and Clay County Historical Society (now the merged Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County). Paulson has been a Moorhead Kiwanis member and fundraiser for 45 years and served as Kiwanis president. He has received national Kiwanis and Lions awards. Paulson has been a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd since 1962. Besides his efforts in Moorhead, Paulson has contributed to projects in Parkers Prairie, Minn., including founding a scholarship program.
Lloyd married Beverly Gerhardson in 1951. Bev died in 2009. They have two children, Bob and Corla (CoCo), and two grandchildren, Monica and Mark. Paulson lives in Moorhead, Minn.
