Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Myers

Inducted Saturday, October 8, 2016

Inductee

Betty Myers graduated with honors from Spring Branch High School in a suburb of Houston, Texas, in 1962. In high school, Myers was involved with National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (honors math program) and yearbook. After graduation Myers attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, where she studied education and English. After two years at Southwestern, she transferred to the University of Texas at Austin where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1966.

In 1972 Myers moved to Moorhead. She taught in the Department of Education at Minnesota State University Moorhead and finished her master’s degree in education at the University of North Dakota. Later she completed her doctorate in education administration at UND.

Myers began working for Moorhead Area Public Schools in 1984 as a second-grade teacher at Riverside Elementary School. From 1987-2003 she served as principal at Robert Asp School, which served fifth- and sixth-grade students. During her tenure at Robert Asp, Myers became a leader and mentor to many teachers and administrators in the district. She was known for holding high expectations and having the ability to make every teacher, staff member, student and parent at the school feel valued. Myers retired from the district in 2004 as principal of Riverside, returning to the school where she first began teaching.

Myers was named a Riverside Teacher of the Year, and she received a Distinguished Service Award from the Art Educators of Minnesota. In 2002 Myers was given the honor of conducting the Moorhead Elementary Orchestra in Chicago before hundreds of people at the Midwest Regional Music Educator’s Conference, which she remembers as one of the highlights of her career.

Myers served on community task forces related to juvenile justice, and she also has served on the boards of Lost and Found Ministry, Cultural Diversity Resources and Temple Beth El.

Myers and her husband, David, live in Moorhead. They have one adult son, Aaron, and one grandson, Christian.
